Ballyhaunis Community School Commemoration Project
This project, completed under the Creative Engagement scheme, was initially set up to engage a small group of students from the school in learning about stained glass and fabricating the project with my help. With the pandemic this became impossible, but the positive consequence was that I could use the artwork of 65 students in the resulting stained glass panel. Here's a brief journey through the process.
Ballyhaunis Commission - patchy paper designing
Ballyhaunis Commission - designing the piece
Lockdown confined me to my house (not my studio), so the first design was on the backs of random bits of paper.
Ballyhaunis Commission - the design becoming clearer
Ballyhaunis Commission - Thinking about colour and patterning
Ballybaunis Commission - Preparing the students carefully drawn leaves for sand blasting
Ballyhaunis Commission - Leaf sand blasted but still covered in paper.
Ballyhaunis Commission - white light showing through sand blasting on green glass leaf
Ballyhaunis Commission - Dark blue glass, covered in resist, sand blasted through the gaps.
Ballyhaunis Commission - Resist removed showing the blueglass with clear stripes.
Ballyhaunis Commission - ceramic transfers of the students' flower paintings
Ballyhaunis Commission - Digital transfers before and after firing onto glass squares
Ballyhaunis Commission - squares with fused transfers being tested for colour and fit
Ballyhaunis Commission - Putting the stained glass panel together using lead around the outside edges.
Ballyhaunis Commission - Using the copper foil method of making stained glass to put the centre together.
